Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

MLD (Manual Lymphatic Drainage) is a specialised massage technique that encourages lymph fluid to drain out of an area affected by swelling into an area that drains normally.  It is a very gentle, non-invasive skin massage that helps to gently restore this system.

Our lymphatic system helps to protect us from infection and disease by acting as a one-way drainage system which filters excess fluid, toxins and waste. It is part of the circulatory system and is comprised of a network of very fine lymphatic vessels, which are somewhat similar to blood vessels. Unlike the circulation of the blood, the lymphatic system has no pumping mechanism. Instead, it relies, for example, on muscular movement and breathing to assist the flow of the lymph fluid.

Lymphatic drainage can benefit people who suffer regularly from common illnesses like colds and flue, Glandular Fever, ME, Migraines, Sinus Problems, Post Cosmetic Surgery, Digestive Problems, Stress and anxiety, Long Covid. It is also recommended for people who lead sedentary lifestyles, or those who want to reduce puffiness caused by water retention, poor circulation or pregnancy.

Additionally, it can have a positive effect on respiratory systems, people with low energy and before or after a long-haul flight.

Lymphatic drainage post-surgery

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage is crucial after surgery because it helps to move the fluid by gently pumping it back into the lymph vessels, reducing the swelling, retention of fluids and pain after the surgery. Without this, the inflammation can evolve into fibrosis (a permanent hardening of the tissue) or a serum (pocket of serum). Many doctors prescribe MLD Therapy after plastic surgery procedures for better results. Cosmetic surgeries (particularly liposuction and tummy tucks) can disrupt the natural pathways taken by the lymphatic system due to the surgery location.  MLD can be tailored to support your post surgical journey and accelerate the recover process.

When can I start?

You can begin your post-surgery lymphatic drainage as early as four days after surgery (depending on the procedure and your doctor's recommendations). It's important to wait until you have received medical clearance from your surgeon. Starting early can accelerate recovery, reduce the risk of complications and improve the overall healing process.

Before your treatment

Before starting, you will complete a medical form and have an initial consultation.  During your session, I will assess your surgery type and stage, check for open drainages, bruises and inflammation and determine the best approach for your treatment.

How many sessions will I need?

You will typically need between 10 and 15 sessions,  depending on the area treated, the procedure, and individual recovery rates. This will usually be  two sessions during the first 2-3 weeks and then weekly. Patients undergoing multiple procedures simultaneously (like liposuction and a tummy tuck) may require more sessions.

How much will it cost?

One session lasting 30 minutes is £50
